What to Keep When the Weather Turns
Every autumn the same thing happens: the summer things go away, the winter things come out, and half of them do not get worn. A short sort now saves a season of shuffling hangers.
Start with what you actually wore
Pull out the pieces you reached for most last autumn. Those are your baseline. Anything you did not touch for a whole season is unlikely to change your mind this year.
Check the three failure points
Cuffs, elbows and hems. That is where knitwear and coats give up first. A jumper that is thin at the elbow will not survive another winter, however much you liked it.
Fill gaps, not shelves
Most wardrobes are missing one or two connecting pieces rather than a whole new set. A coat that works over dresses as well as trousers does more than three jumpers.
Store the rest properly
Fold knits rather than hanging them, and keep everything out of plastic so it can breathe. Things kept well come back out looking like themselves.
