Getting Pleats to Sit Properly
A pleated skirt does most of the work of an outfit on its own. It also loses its shape faster than anything else in the wardrobe if it is washed and dried carelessly.
Wash cool, spin low
Heat and hard spinning are what flatten pleats. A cool gentle cycle, inside out, keeps the folds set.
Hang it wet
This is the opposite of knitwear. Hang a pleated skirt from the waistband while damp and let gravity pull the folds straight as it dries.
Press from the inside
If it needs an iron, work on the reverse with a cloth between the iron and the fabric, following each fold rather than across them.
Store it hanging
Folded in a drawer, a pleated skirt picks up creases in the wrong direction. Hang it, and give it a little room on either side.
